Euro 2020 is fast approaching and Finland are tipped to be the tournament’s surprise package — according to the latest supercomputer study from bookmakers Casumo.
After finishing second in their qualification group, Finland will be making their debut at the tournament, and they will certainly leave their mark on Euro 2020, as it’s predicted that Markku Kanerva’s men will reach the last 16 of the competition.
Finland, who enter the tournament as 500/1 outsiders in the Euro 2020 winner odds, have been drawn into Group B, where they will face Denmark, Russia and Belgium.
However, they look set to exceed expectations, kicking their tournament off with a comfortable 3-1 win over Denmark in Copenhagen before clinching a narrow 1-0 victory over Russia in St. Petersburg.
Defeat to Belgium in the final group game will follow, securing Finland second in the group and booking their place in the last 16 — where runners-up in Group A Turkey will get the better of them with a 1-0 victory at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.
Nonetheless, it will be great to see Finland added to the long list of overachievers from over the years at the European Championships.
Finland won’t be the only ones causing a stir as Netherlands’ striker Wout Weghorst is predicted to be the shock winner of the tournament’s Golden Boot. The 28-year-old is currently as far out as 30/1 in the top scorer euro 2020 odds.
However, with Frank de Boer’s side set to face Austria, North Macedonia and Ukraine in Group C, Weghorst looks set to score a hatful of goals.
Number crunchers at the bookmaker ran the simulation of the Euros using a unique statistical model. Their series of complex calculations look at variables that include: fixtures, squads, form and more.
