The Real Cost Of The World Cup

With the 2022 Qatar World Cup fast approaching, a study by The Punters Page has revealed that US fans could be forced to fork out just over $16,000 to watch the national team.

The Cost Of Supporting The US At The 2022 Qatar World Cup

Research took into account flights, accommodation, food, drink and tickets under the assumption that the team could potentially make it to the round-of-16 later this year, as the bookmakers odds suggest could feasibly happen.

The final cost came out at a whopping $16,340.

The people of Brazil face a crucial general election in the coming weeks, and with inflation so high there currently, fans of The Selecao could have to pay $30,186 should they reach the final.

Other key points from the study show:

  • The average price of following a nation for the group stages alone came to $3,920 for just the first three matches.
  • Brazil fans could be forced to pay an average of $5,221 per match if reaching the final on December 18.
  • Lusail, which hosts 10 World Cup matches in the National Stadium, has an average Airbnb price of$2,095 per night between November 20 and December 18.

Further research uncovered some extra costs in Qatar. The average Emirates Holiday package came to £4,125, while two nights in an Airbnb in Qatar overall during the World Cup would cost an average of $2,130.

Average flight prices for all nations came to $1,531 per person. Supporters should be able to purchase three meals a day for a more reasonable $51 a day, but a pint of beer will cost around $12.

England fans’ will also have to be on their best behaviour, with strict drinking laws applied in Qatar regarding drunkenness in public. A $802 fine could be a best-case scenario if any supporters are punished by the local authorities.

Methodology:

Prices calculated using Emirates Holiday packages, booking flights and accommodation separately. Food and drink prices based on what we estimate the average fan consumes each day and/or during a match.

Flight and accommodation data sourced from Skyscanner and Airbnb, selecting dates before and after each match. For example, if Argentina played on 22/11/2022, we selected 21-23 November 2022.
